Die BGF schafft und erhält preis- und lebenswerten, umweltgerechten und auf zukünftige Bedürfnisse ausgerichteten Wohnraum ohne spekulative Hintergründe. Sie fördert die Genossenschaftsidee und möchte interessierte und engagierte Mitglieder für den Genossenschaftsgedanken gewinnen. Wichtig ist die aktive Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe. Gemeinschaftliche Aktivitäten der Genossenschafterinnen und Genossenschafter werden gefördert. Die BGF besitzt in der Stadt Zürich und ihrer Agglomeration rund 1’100 Wohnungen.
